how expanding works

i decided to look at how expanding works for this gif brief which allowed me to explore a range of ideas, leading me onto working purely with shape which is something i don't do very often.

i really enjoyed this way of working and it allowed me to simplify the way in which i work - i tend to stick to figurative ways of working and i felt that this was breaking from the norm a bit; which is always a good thing!

for this gif i thought an afro expanding would be quite cute and relatable to other ladies of colour out there; the feedback i received on it initially wasn't the best but i'm glad i stuck with it as it's probably my favourite out of all the gifs i made! 

initially, i was worried that having such distinct subject matter on each gif would stop them from looking like they belonged in a series but i think i did a pretty good job at making them consistent in their aesthetics. even though they're all so different visually they co-exist quite well.

in retrospect, this is definitely one of my favourite briefs so far. after i stopped overthinking about how good i wanted these to be, i found the process of making them so much fun and had a really good time! will 100% make more gifs in the future!
