mm food mf doom

research book


started off this project in the same way i did with illmatic - with a research book looking into reviews and thoughts around the album as well as quotes from MF DOOM himself and his ideas behind the album. 
attempting to get the gist of it on a deeper level than i previously did - im familiar with and love the album for it's wacky and quirky samples but looking further into it has been interesting; and themes i'm picking out are those of duality mostly with the food related bars being metaphors for larger thoughts and ideas about hip hop/the music industry, love and friendship, & assertive pride/ confidence in his own craft as a lyricist.

i'm getting too focused on how my imagery will fit my outcome for this brief and am trying to let go of that for that and focus on drawing exhaustively instead and immersing myself in how the things im learning about the album can translate visually.
being such a sample heavy album, it's been helpful for me to look up the video/film references and draw from those to get me started but unsure about whether those would relate directly to the themes of the album itself but thinking of using those as a starting point to then combine with the tone and messages of specific bars i've picked out from the album.

initially i thought i would just focus on the food aspects (literally) to inform my image making but i feel some of those feelings expressed within the album would be worth exploring - ideally i would like to have a mix of fun elements and more heartfelt ones. maybe the fun aspect of the album can come through instead through the visual qualities of my work. 

excited about it though just wanting to build an archive of drawings that i can play around with and combine into an outcome. this week will be about building that archive and next week about solidifying ideas into something more final. good stuff!!
