I found this module quite stressful and definitely don’t feel I have done enough work but actually looking back at some of the work I have done, I see a lot of progress in terms of my confidence approaching briefs. I finally learnt to trust my intuition when it comes to them because when I do, things work out a lot better for me. I feel like this is really clear with my gifs and untold story zine – I kind of just did what I wanted and I’m really happy with the outcomes I made for those briefs.
Even though I could have done a lot more research for Tell an Untold Story, I really do feel like I thrived off of being able to tell a story through a selection of pages in a zine as opposed to just working with a single image/idea which I find so so HARD! Aesthetically, I managed to achieve that lo-fi, hand-drawn quality I appreciate so much in illustration work and the story is simple and clear. Possibly my favourite outcome from this year.
I definitely feel the most confident when I’m able to work on and tell my own stories – problem solving on a more focused brief is very difficult which makes me enjoy it a lot less. Definitely need to get better at it.
Learning about compositional theory was a bit boring if I’m being honest. I felt that I was learning some things but thought mostly, these were things I kind of do naturally??? In saying that, I really appreciated them because they definitely made me more conscious of composition itself – I feel like now I’m a lot more thorough with my planning and I do find myself thinking of ways I can make my images more interesting/appropriate through composition, which I was a bit lazy with before.
In this last brief, I definitely feel like I had a discovery in terms of my approach to image making. Changing the hue of my scanned drawings was life changing! And overall playing around with my drawings on photoshop was really fun. I find that I tend to stick to the same colour schemes but playing around with the hue really changed things for me and the mood of my zine. The purples and yellows made it look like it’s set late in the evening as the sun is setting, which works really well with the subject matter.
I’d say looking at John Cochran’s gif earlier in this module on my blog really pushed my practice in terms of being confident enough to make work that looks handmade. I used to fall into the trap of thinking digital work looked instantly polished but I don’t enjoy my work when it’s purely digital and I’ve learn the ways of editing it and polishing it up whilst retaining those handmade textures.
I have a lot of things I want to take to the future – I need to be more confident in my ideas and make work I want to make; I should draw more from observation because there’s real value in doing that. It makes my drawings more precious and less stylized which is sometimes needed.
Should also keep working with textures because they are yummy and fun.
In the future, I’d also like to take on projects straight on and work through that uncomfortable stage that is the beginning of a brief.
