aquariums are problematic but! i had a nice day and was pretty happy with the drawings i made.
drawing moving fish is also really difficult so i sneakily stuck with drawings of coral and other bits that didn't move that fast (if at all hehe). overall, i felt this was a major update from the grassington trip and i had a good time.
things i found difficult
. not feeling underlying guilt about being in an aquarium
. drawing fish
. carrying pens and pencils, my two bags, my massive jacket, my sketchbook & trying to draw
. drawing penguins
things i enjoyed
. mixed media
. coral!
drawing from observation
i find drawing from observation challenging but also really really valuable. this session in particular was extremely important in terms of reminding me of the importance of "breaking (my) habitual approach to making" (hi matt) and really pushed my preconceived notions of how drawings are and can be made. i'm not particularly happy with any of the drawings from the session but i feel like i have learnt a lot, and that's what's important. the way i usually draw can be quite meticulous but we were really encouraged to draw with energy and with intent. it was hard and i did the typical bit of overthinking but i've made a mental note to keep this practice going because there's a lot to be taken from it.
