proposal + presentation
content + research
*hip hop history through selected albums spanning over the 90s and early 2000s
*into the idea of using music ephemera (CDs, vinyl, posters, clothes) because of their tactile, collectible and precious nature - and using those to explore story telling and narrative
relevant to my practice because it will allow me to continue to explore narrative which is what underpins a lot of my work
it will also allow me to tap back into the politics of representation within image making due to hiphop being so black centric - nice connection to making work i feel represented by which has always been important within my practice
*research informed and inspired primarily by hiphop evolution series on netflix!
process + methodology
*interested in exploring screenprint again - on paper but mostly on fabric
*painting? gouache
*drawing and pushing digital processes
*digital print on fabric
a lot of this project will also be about design which will be nice to continue developing skills in - more publications, more tapping into the design side of things which i always enjoy
context + application
i tend to be more inspired by practitioners outside of the realm of illustration - photographers, graphic designers & art directors for music videos so i'm excited to bring in the skills and qualities in their work to my own practice
illustration wise i'm into people who push the boundaries of where illustration exists beyond 2D images - i like people who put their work on objects where theres a clear process of application and where it feels tangible and innovative in some way?
content and visually i'm really drawn to work where representation exists in a way it doesn't feel forced - where it's still intentional but not entirely what the work is about
speculative outcomes
*designs for CDs, Vinyl, Tshirts, Posters
*big installation idea where these objects can exist in
*nurturing the idea of discovery, and feeling through objects and spaces
