project proposal
my original project proposal was a bit of a mix of different things i was interested in exploring - too broad and lacked focus.
initially i was thinking of exploring things like gender identity, race & body image because these were the narratives that usually come up in my writing - and originally that's what i was planning on working from.
but i realised that the overall theme that encompasses my interests is the idea of safe spaces. and a safe space for me is music.
tame impala's innerspeaker is an album i feel really creates a safe space for me and it's an album that i felt would allow me to explore narratives i resonate with without them being overly specific to me, directly about me or from stuff i've written myself. so the idea for this project is to use that album as source material for my work and using it to inspire narratives about themes i really relate to/ resonate with.
so i'd define my brief as "exploring the safe spaces found within tame impala's innerspeaker and the narratives/ subjects that arise within their music - time, connection, awareness, alienation, identity, duality - through a lens of society and culture, and a consideration for the politics of representation. how does tame impala's innerspeaker take me to a safe space? what does it make it me think about? how does it make me feel?"
so this brief is sort of an indirect response to that album - it's more about what the album makes me feel and think about as opposed to being a project about the album itself. and the representation aspect of it is just an underlying, subtle aspect of my work that is important to me - just making sure that my race and gender identity are represented in my work through things like character design.
