editorial

consciousness

i found this brief really difficult. my article was about consciousness and that in itself is quite a difficult concept to visualise.
i focused on the introductory part of the article where it questioned whether babies had any conscious awareness and used that as my main motif. initially, i had ideas about just using the brain as a motif but thought that would be too obvious and overdone. looking back i kind of wish i had. having too much information can make it confusing and unclear. after reading some feedback and reflecting on it myself i know that my image doesn't really translate this idea of consciousness very well at all.
the restricted use of two colours threw me off a bit as well. i really struggled at the beginning to pick two colours that would be appropriate for the article. i also feel like i could have spent more time working with my ideas and refining them. i was playing with ideas to do with the universe and to me the planets travelling on top of the brain seemed like a good visual representation of consciousness. i still think this idea works but not on its own.

i liked the copic drawings the best so I decided to refine them on photoshop. in retrospect i wish i had used the idea of the baby on its mother's lap instead. to me, it describes the messages conveyed in the article in a much clearer way than the design i ended up choosing.

the feedback i received aligned with my opinions of my work but it was interesting nevertheless, to see what other people thought of it.
